Leak 1 — search terms drift. Your keywords are a bid on a territory; matching decides what actually enters. Over months, the search terms report fills with queries adjacent to your intent — research queries, job hunters, DIY-ers, the wrong product generation. Each is small; the aggregate is the classic leak, and it compounds quietly because every week of tolerated drift teaches matching that the drift is acceptable. The tell: terms with spend, no conversions, and a theme you would never have bid on deliberately. Leak 2 — near-duplicate keywords. The same intent captured twice — separate ad groups, overlapping match types — leaves Google to arbitrate which serves. Leak 3 — brand cannibalisation. Brand queries slipping into non-brand campaigns flatter everything they touch — non-brand CPA looks better than it is, and budget decisions inherit the lie. The tell: your own name inside non-brand search terms. The fix: negative your brand out of non-brand campaigns and let the brand campaign own it, so each campaign's numbers mean what they claim to mean.
Leaks 4-6: display expansion, search partners, location settings
Leak 4 — display expansion. A checkbox at campaign setup lets search campaigns extend onto the Display Network. Display traffic behaves nothing like search traffic, and inside a search campaign it hides in blended averages. Leak 5 — search partners. Partner-site traffic is bundled in by default and reported only when you segment by network. Sometimes it performs; often it drags. Give it a fair reading — partners include search-shaped placements that occasionally convert cheaply, which is why blanket rules in either direction are wrong. The tell is the segmented view; the decision is per campaign, on that campaign's own partner numbers.
Leak 6 — location presence settings. Targeting a region does not, by default, mean being physically there — the default location option includes people who showed interest in the region. The interest half exists for good reasons — travellers, researchers, gift buyers — which is exactly why it fails businesses whose product stops at a boundary. The tell: user-location reports showing spend from outside your service area. The fix: switch the campaign to presence-only and re-check after the change lands.

Not spend leaking directly, but every allocation decision downstream leaks because of it. The tell: conversion action totals that do not reconcile with your CRM or order system. The audit question is blunt: for each real-world outcome, which single action is primary, and what does everything else exist to observe? Any action without an answer is a candidate.
Leak 10 — pacing overshoot. Google may spend up to twice your average daily budget on strong days, while the month is capped at your daily budget times 30.4 — mechanics documented in Google's overdelivery article. The leak is a shape problem: front-loaded spend exhausting the month before its strongest days, or daily budgets set with no monthly arithmetic behind them at all. The tell: daily spend curves sawing hard against flat conversion curves, and month-ends that arrive over plan.
